Deck maintenance is important to preserves its overall integrity and lengthen its life. Constant exposure to all types of weather is makes a deck area vulnerable to a slew of issues, many of which can be avoided by consistent care. Outdoor living spaces are desirable spots in any home and caring for them is essential.
Wash the deck. A power washer is the best tool for this care, and whether your deck is made of wood or composite materials it should be cleaned at least once a year, if not more. Pay attention to the slats between planks, often using a knife is the best way to get between boards and get the debris out. Deck cleaners can be purchased, or water/bleach solutions can be mixed to help, which can eliminate any bacteria or mold that is clinging to the planks.
Check for loose or missing screws or nails. Deck screws/nails tend to loosen over time, especially if located in any planks that may be rotting. Replacing screws or simply resetting them could be the answer, otherwise replacing a plank could be necessary.
Examine the underside of your deck if possible. Look at the decks joints, footers, and posts. It is important that all the support systems that are in place be sturdy and strong to avoid the chance of collapse.
Sealing your deck is an important step in its preservation. The exposure to constant sun, rain, and wind can leave your deck weathered and beaten, sealing it protects it from the elements. There are a variety of sealers, both clear and colored. Sealing each year is important for decks with wood surfaces.
