“In the Beginning…” I won’t go there. However, I remember not so many years ago, before inputing a listing on the internet – We had the client with our help fill out the Multiple Listing Data Sheet, take that plus $19.00 to the Board of Realtors to have it entered into the MLS system.
The Listing would go live within 24 hours and the printout was picked up at the Board by all of the Brokers at the many different real estate offices.
Shortly thereafter, we then were able to put listings on the market with a computer, MS DOS based program, and a dial up modem. Disconnects were very frequent and frustrating. The system was cumbersome and difficult to use.
A little time later, we had a software based internet input option – Faster connection speeds and the ability to give our clients passwords and usernames to search the MLS system. The system was only local and only showed homes for sale within the Local Board’s Boundaries. At the time – this worked very well.
That stopped as the internet and the Real Estate Search for Homes became more and more frequent by buyers and sellers. There was money to be made, big money. So Realtor.com, Homes.com, RealEstate.com and others were born, almost over night. These systems became very large – very fast. Today they are a Billion Dollar a Year industry. You will notice this by all of the Ads and different levels of membership available to the Real Estate Agents.
In fact, some of the systems, promising more accurate searches and glimpses of “pending foreclosures”, charging a fee for buyers and sellers to join their search portal.
