Paris and I were speaking during our daily de-brief. We are in the same business, we are on the same team, we are more than life partners, we are business partners too.
Last night we were talking about life and we came to agree on one thing about life being like the game of Poker.
In life, we deduced, you get dealt a certain hand of cards. From time to time, we all get chances to trade in some “bad cards” to the house and get new cards.
These are also known as “crossroads”. Those times when a person might reflect and think to themselves, “I should of zigged when I zagged.”
Usually, the number of cards you trade in are not everything you have been dealt. You hold onto some of the “best” cards in your hand. However, some of us, give up the whole hand to start a new. These brave souls embrace change. They have the intestinal fortitude not to be followers. They are the true leaders of society.
Some will point and tell others to look at the, “crazy person”. But, some will follow and want to know where they obtained the strength/insight to give up everything and start on a totally new path.
If you are a Business Owner, you fit the bill of someone that has probably traded in their hand several times over. In fact, you might be one of the “crazy people” that have done so and do not look back.
Remember Edison? The man that created the Light Bulb? Do you know how many times he traded cards for new ones? Thomas Edison’s teachers commented that he was “too stupid to learn anything.” He was canned from his first two jobs for being “non-productive.” As an inventor, Edison made over 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” Edison stated, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”
Those that “don’t look back”, make the biggest gains in life. They are not tied to their “bad hand”. They are searching for the 4 aces and eventually find it. The rare few will get their hands on a “royal flush”, which is the rarest poker hand.
Remember, when you are down in the dumps, everyone in life has been dealt a hand, some bad and some good. Some are prettier than yours, some are much uglier. The fact of the matter is that everyone has a story. If you are tied to a bad hand – trade in a few cards – and get on with living without looking back!
Are you a gambler? You might be a bigger gambler than you think! Was this uplifting? Did this come at the right time? Please comment below, tweet, post on facebook, or all three! – Thanks.
