April 16, 2012 – at a weight of 355 I started a ketogenic diet. That is what can also be called the induction phase of the Atkins diet. Less than 20 grams of carbs a day. I have cut out all sugar, all bread, all grains, and fruit (except strawberries 🙂 ).
Even though I am choosing not to eat candy, cake, donuts (miss them), and ice cream, I do desire them from time to time. However, those cravings are few and far between now. I’m looking forward to a year on this plan. I am sure I’ll be close to my goal. Heck – I am a 40″ waist today. When I started I was 52″ waist and pant size.
My Cholesterol dropped into the normal range. The Triglycerides in my blood did as well. Heck, all of my elevated, “heart attack pending” numbers did.
However, that does not make any sense, according to my doctor. I have increased fat to be about 80% of my diet. Protein is about 17-20% – Zero carb if I can, but coffee and eggs have very little in the way of carbs, but they do have small amounts, so they must be counted in my daily totals.
I was in a store eariler this week, picking up some “fancies for my Paris”. While at the counter someone told me I had great skin. I told her that I was eating this way – “A high fat diet” and she said that I must be drinking a lot of water. It’s true – I am drinking almost two gallons a day of water to keep me flushed. I notice how much water I’m drinking by my skin being so plush and that I’m typically negative for keytone bodies if I am at my typical level of hydration. However, when I don’t have time or access to fluids – I’m in the purple range at the next voiding of my Blatter.
Another lady joined her. They said I may want to cut back on all the fat I was eating. I did not know these ladies from adam. Yet, they were attempting to get me to change my new way of life. They said all that fat is not good for you. “You need to eat more in the way of healthy grains and cut the fat”, she said if I really wanted to see more dramatic improvements.
I’ll never forget what my dad used to say about Opinions… I’ll let you know next time 🙂
